Sushmita Jena

Sushmita Jena is a renewable energy researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), where she has worked for five years. Her research focuses on the voluntary procurement of energy by large commercial and industrial buyers. She develops analytical tools, conducts research, and produces knowledge products to support decision-making. She also provides technical assistance to stakeholders navigating the clean energy transition. Beyond energy procurement, Sushmita leads efforts in voluntary carbon dioxide removal (CDR) markets. She is currently spearheading an initiative to standardize carbon removal offtake agreements, helping to create transparent and scalable frameworks for CDR transactions. Before joining NREL, Sushmita worked in international development across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, contributing to energy access and sustainability initiatives. She holds a Master’s degree in Renewable Energy and International Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
