Low Impact Certification for New Pumped Storage Hydro
The Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) has been working with more than 30 professionals with a variety of perspectives to develop a certification for low impact pumped storage.
A LIHI certification is one way to demonstrate that a project's owner is going beyond what is required in a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. And, the certification can be used to fulfill requests for transparency relative to the project's impacts. Nationally, certain voluntary Renewable Energy Credit (REC) markets recognize LIHI certification, as does the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
This session explores the proposed process for getting a project certified as low impact, including the expectation the project developer will “meaningfully engage” tribes and stakeholders at the onset of project siting. Additionally, the moderator will lead the panelists in a discussion about the tangible benefits to a project developer if it is granted a certification.
